Mohannad Ismail

Graduate Research Assistant
The Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Virginia Tech

I am a fifth-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech, working with Dr. Changwoo Min and Dr. Wenjie Xiong. My main research interests are in software and system security, particularly memory safety and low-level compiler analysis. I focus on utilizing the latest hardware security features to build defenses against spatial and temporal memory attacks. My recent work includes utilizing the LLVM compiler framework to build defenses against control-flow hijacking and data-oriented attacks, utilizing Intel's Memory Protection Keys (MPK) and ARM's Pointer Authentication Codes (PAC) hardware security features. I have also worked on protecting system calls from being abused with privilege escalation attacks, crash consistency in Non-Volatile Main Memory (NVMM), and secure allocators. I received my M.Sc in Computer Engineering from Virginia Tech and B.Eng. in Computer Engineering from Mansoura University.
