In addition to many other networking services, CNS provides campus with wired network ports in every office and lab. Additional ports can be requested for a fee.
Some basic information about CNS wired ports
- There is a monthly usage fee (http://www.cns.vt.edu/data_departmentRate.html)
- Ports are limited to a single MAC address (i.e. a single computer or router)
- If you have multiple computers and only one port, you must use a router to set up a private network
When you connect your device to the wired port, you will need to setup either a static or dynamic network address to be able to connect to the internet.

[edit] Static Network Address
Static network addresses are most useful for servers and devices that require remote access. If you are running a server (web, file, etc) or just want to be able to remote into your device (Remote Desktop, SSH, FTP, etc) then you should use a static address.
- Static addresses are assigned individually to F/S, not to ports or computers.
- Static addresses are not limited to a specific port and will work anywhere in the building that the network address is assigned to.
- Static addresses are paired with a DNS (domain name system) name. This allows connectivity to the network device either by DNS Name or Network Address.
ECE domain names are restricted to the following format: something.ece.vt.edu
If you require a static address, submit a ticket and include the building and desired DNS address

[edit] Dynamic (DHCP) Network Address
Anyone can register their network device for DHCP addresses. DHCP will work in most (if not all) buildings on campus.
To register your device, use the MAC Registration Tool
